Hendrick Motorsports | Did we really let Kyle Busch get away

By: Brenda Hyatt

Las Vegas (Aug 26) – Kyle Busch love him or hate him is destined to be one of the greats in all of NASCAR history. His driving at Bristol Motor Speedway last Saturday was perfection. Busch owned the track and he has been there before; winning just like he did on Sunday ending the week sweeping all three NASCAR races making history.

Due to the struggling economy, NASCAR has seen a dip in attendance, but drivers like Kyle Busch shake things up and make you want to see what’s next. Going into the chase after the next two races all eyes will be on Jimmie Johnson trying for his fifth straight Sprint Cup Championship in the number 48 Chevrolet. But eyes will also be on the number 18 Toyota of Kyle Busch and you better believe Hendrick Motorsports is watching.

Rogers, crew chief for Kyle Busch, keeps the pit stops smooth and when they don’t, they hear from their driver. Unlike a lot of drivers, you never hear Kyle complain “it’s the car”. Most of his complaints on the track are other drivers taking up space on “his” track. That’s what you have to love about Kyle, he isn’t shy.

Four of the drivers Burton, Edwards, Gordon and Stewart are in the chase, not all necessarily locked in yet, but they haven’t had a win this year. Is it possible to win a Championship without a win? It’s possible but not likely.

Jimmie Johnson will be going into the race at Atlanta behind Kyle Busch with a 93 point difference between them. The last of the 26 races will be at Richmond September 11th and then the chase begins at Loudon on September 19th. Those last ten races will give us a new Sprint cup champion and Jimmie Johnson and Kyle Busch will be the two to watch.

“It’s the car…” We’re not talking about Gordon, are we?

I don’t love him or hate him. I think he’s a talented driver who is also an arrogant “what Brad said”. Rick Hendrick being Rick Hendrick, I expect he’s relieved every time Kyle shows his lack of class both on and off the track. Was he perfect last week? Perfect would having been winning the Nationwide race without wrecking your competition; perfect would have been winning the truck race without shoving Jennifer Jo Cobb out out the way (with which a little more patience, he could have easily done. Talent covers a multitude of sins but….I don’t think Rick Hendrick is sorry he doesn’t have to deal with Kyle and all his temperamental immaturity.
